Under UK law, all wood burned on domestic fires MUST be certified ''ready to burn''. The fine for burning uncertified wood can be as much as £1000. This is to ensure minimum possible air pollution and is a real need in this day and age. This law is enforced by DEFRA. All certified firewood has to be free of chemicals (untreated) and hold under 20% moisture content. Scrap wood is treated and should never be burned on a domestic fire.
It can take up to 2 years to dry firewood naturally or it can be kiln dried by the consumption of fuel to heat and dry it. The above facts are
reflected in the price of legal firewood.
All firewood should be stored in dry and ventilated conditions
